Description
On 23 July 1812 in Vergennes, north of Lake Champlain, on Otter Creek, where an iron foundry already existed for the production of nails, spikes and cannonballs, as well as an equipped sawmill that could use the timber supplied by the rich surrounding forests (white oak and pine), more than 200 shipwrights, under the direction of Adam and Noah Brown, laid the keel of a new 20-gun brig: The Eagle.
The reduced draft of the Eagle Gil allowed to navigate in the shallow waters of the lake without problems and its crew made up of men from the American Army only (soldiers, band musicians and even prisoners ...) was 150 members including officers and sailors.
On August 31st, the fleet of the American Royal Navy, to which the Eagle belonged, sailed from the Canadian border to Plattsburgh (New York), where the ships, after anchoring in the bay, formed a formation that could cope with the attack from whichever direction came.
The battle with the British took place on 11 September 1814 and ended after about 3 hours with the defeat of the latter, which greatly influenced the decision of the British government to conclude a peace treaty with the United States on Christmas Eve. same year.
After the battle on the Eagle 13 sailors were killed, 20 wounded and 39 gashes on the hull caused by enemy fire, but the ship came out victorious despite the deep wounds received.
