La R5 è stata la best seller della Renault dal 1972. Mentre la R5 Turbo ti dà l'impressione di essere un Jean Ragnotti di tutti i giorni, il marchio vuole aggiungere una Turbo a una R5 meno bodybuilder per competere con la Golf Gti. A questo scopo è stata scelta la R5 Alpine. Nel 1985, la R5 Alpine è diventata Alpine turbo.
