La Polo di seconda generazione apparve sul mercato nel 1982. La "formica", diceva l'annuncio, si sarebbe trasformata in una piccola auto sportiva compatta due anni dopo con l'arrivo della G40. Questa versione ha preso il nome dal motore G40 sviluppato dalla Volkswagen. Questa è una versione più leggera del G60 progettata per le corse automobilistiche.
