L’H.M.S. (His Majesty’s Ship, ossia Nave di Sua Maesta’) BELLONA fu uno dei più famosi celebri vascelli da 74 cannoni della Marina Britannica. Il 74 cannoni costituì il fulcro delle principali potenze navali europee dalla Guerra dei Sette Anni (1756 - 1763), fino al termine delle Guerre Napoleoniche (1815). L‘Ammiragliato Britannico intraprese nel 1755 l’allestimento, sotto la guida del Sovrintendente Thomas Slade, dei primi vascelli di tale categoria, la cosiddetta classe Dublin.Varato il 19 febbraio 1760, il BELLONA fu inviato a sostegno del blocco navale di Brest. Il 30 dicembre 1780 il BELLONA prese parte alla cattura del 44 cannoni olandese Princess Caroline; operò quindi al largo di Gibilterra nel Mare del Nord e nelle Indie Occidentali. Nonostante fossero trascorsi più di 50 anni dal varo, il BELLONA prestò servizio fino al febbraio 1814; fu demolito a Chatham nel settembre dello stesso anno.

74-gun ships of the British Navy (1780)

The H.M.S. (His Majesty’s Ship) BELLONA was one of the most famous 74-gun ships of the British Navy. The BELLONA, launched on 19 February 1760, sailed to join the battlefleet which was then blockading Brest. On 30 December 1780 the BELLONA took part in the capture of the 44-gun Dutch ship Princess Caroline; then she cruised off Gibraltar, in the North Sea and the West Indies. She was employed in the blockade of Cadiz; then, the BELLONA was at Jamaica, at Portsmouth and at Barbados.
Although more than 50 years from her launch were passed, the BELLONA served in the Navy until
February 1814.
