The Sd.Kfz. 234/4 was an improvisation to use the 7.5 cm Pak 40 on the chassis of the Sd.Kfz. 234. The first vehicle was demonstrated in December 1944. It carried 30 to 36 cartridges (depending on the source). However, the chassis also reached its limits with this armament. By April 1945, approximately 70-90 vehicles had been built and deployed in the armored reconnaissance units, which in turn were repeatedly used as combat units to stop enemy tanks using the hit-and-run principle (fire and retreat).
